Activity: Preparing transitional housing for community membersRenegades 4-H Club

Group: Renegades 4-H Club — Rock County

Date of Activity: April 26, 2014

Number of people: 16 youth; 2 adults

Number of hours: 2 hours per person

We assisted in preparing a duplex in Edgerton for tenants in the transitional housing program for moving in.  We did this by washing walls, cleaning cupboards, picking up debris around the yard and cleaning the home in general.  We also assisted at the food pantry by cleaning shelves and canned goods that were dirty from the remodeling project.  Another group of members helped go through donated items and discard broke and non-functioning items.

The Renegades assisted families who are in transition to be able to move into clean and well-kept homes while they get back on their feet. The items cleaned will go to families and individuals in need. The items that were deemed to be in good working order will be sold to purchase items for the food pantry.

The Renegades came together in an effort to support individuals in need and learned that there are numerous ways to help.  Some ways are less obvious than others.

The Salvation Army relies on volunteers to ring bells and collect donations during the holiday season to provide various services throughout the community. The Renegades did a fantastic job of expressing holiday cheer and gratitude for the donations that were made during the time they volunteered.  There were various discussions with our members about how the donations benefit many different people throughout the community.

Activity: Christmas caroling at the Edgerton Care Center

Group: Renegades 4-H Club — Rock County

Date of Activity: December 21, 2013

Number of people: 10 youth; 6 adults

Number of hours: 1 hour per person

Our group came to the Edgerton Care Center to sing carols for the residents there. We wanted to share holiday cheer with people who are unable to get out and enjoy holiday festivities. The residents enjoyed having youth come visit with them and share their cheer. Some even sang along! The staff said we are welcome to come and visit again.

The youth learned that it is important to focus not only on receiving gifts but on giving gifts as well. They also learned that time and caring are wonderful gifts that can be very appreciated.
