Date of Activity: August 15, 2013

Number of people: 9 youth; 4 adults

Lucky Horseshoe been doing this community service project for a couple of years. In June we voted to restore the historical signs. The Caitlin’s volunteered to bring the paint and brushes. We decided to restore the signs in August.

It feels good to help do things in the community that needs attention instead of just letting someone else do the work.

Activity: Dairy promotion at June Dairy Breakfast

Group: Lucky Horseshoe 4-H Club –Polk County

Date of Activity: June 15, 2013

Number of people: 9 youth; 4 adults

Number of hours: 2 hours per person

First we brainstormed the idea of doing dairy promotion during June and the Clayton Cheese Days seemed like the perfect event.  Next we filled out and received a grant from the County Dairy fundraising committee to help fulfill our plans.  Finally, we handed out cheese curds to kids as they finished the pedal tractor pull. The cheese had little signs that said June Dairy Month on one side and Lucky Horseshoe 4-H on the other.

The kids who did the pedal pull got a nice nourishing snack, packed with protein and got to learn about the wonderful dairy industry. Hopefully, this also generated interest in 4-H and the dairy project, and helped them feel good about themselves and have a good feeling about their efforts.

It is nice to give out treats and tell them that they did a good job.  We thought it was important to participate because of our club members are in the Dairy Project and know the importance of promoting the dairy industry.  It is also important for our club to reach out to the young members of our communities.
