Activity: Building Leopold benches in a local park
Group: Hi-Lo’s 4-H Club — Lincoln County
Date of Activity: September 2013
Number of people: 3 youth; 2 adults
Number of hours: 6 hours per person
The rural school in our area is closed and the Township now owns it. Folks in the neighborhood have built two baseball diamonds, a tennis court, picnic area and a children’s playground area. When parents/ grandparents would bring the youngsters out to play on the equipment they had no place to sit while supervising the youngsters. Our club recognized the need. They wrote a grant and presented it to the T.A.F.F.Y Foundation. They gave us $168.00, enough money to buy materials for 2 benches. The Tomahawk Area Foundation For Youth will give grants to non-profit groups to work on community projects. Chris Busche, Austin Lienen, and Brett Borchardt were the 3 young men who carried out the project. Candi Busche and Randy Senoraske were the adult supervisors.
The parents/ grandparents were pleased with the seating. Now they could bring along a book and read while watching the youngsters. The kids loved the benches. Now they got to play longer.
The 3 young men learned to use some power tools. They learned how to follow a pattern. They learned what type of finish to use on outdoor furniture. The benches were Aldo Leopold benches so as a result they learned who Aldo Leopold was. They felt good about providing the benches so others could be comfortable while watching the youngsters. And the little tykes really liked them because it meant they could stay longer at the playground.
