Activity: Design a Landscape
Once you’ve watched the videos, try practicing some of the concepts you learned about by designing a landscape for a small courtyard garden in a hospital. We want this activity to give you:
- A chance to experiment and create in an encouraging, no-pressure setting
- Experience thinking about how space is used
We don’t expect you to have the “right type of design”. This is all about learning and practicing. So enjoy the opportunity to dream and create!
Instructions
- Download and print the site plan.
- Watch Tips for Getting Started.
- Create your design.
- **When you start drawing plants, do not write in specific plant names. We want you to focus on designing the use and flow of the space rather than picking out particular plants. Examples of what to write: “medium shrub”, “red annuals in containers”, “large tree”
- Return it to us for feedback. University of Wisconsin-Madison Landscape Architecture students will provide constructive and positive comments on your designs. Options for returning:

- Mail a paper copy to: Amy Freidig c/o The Master Gardener Program, 1575 Linden Drive, Madison, WI 53706
- Please note: The students will only providing feedback on the activity and are unable to offer insight on any personal landscape designs.
- Your design with feedback will be returned to you by the same method you sent it to us. Due to the busy student schedules, expect a time delay before your plan is returned to you. You may count the hours toward your continuing education requirement even if your reviewed plan has not been returned to you.
