Farmers market

FLEs encourage seniors to attend their local farmers market by giving them tours and providing vouchers. Amanda Miller (amanda.m.miller@wisc.edu) does this in Fond du Lac county.

Food preservation and safety

FLEs provide information and answer questions from senior community members on food preservation and safety.

Food safety

This is a one time presentation on food safety. FLEs in Wood, Oneida, Green Lake,  and Waushara counties have recently offered seminars on this topic for seniors at their senior center, senior meal sites, and farmer’s market.

Food labels

This is a one time seminar on reading nutrition labels. This has recently been offered in Oconto county for seniors.

Healthy cooking for 1 or 2

This is a one-time seminar on how to prepare foods for only one or two people. It has recently been offered for seniors in four counties (Waushara, Oconto, Waupaca, and Jackson). FLEs presented this seminar at senior meal sites or for HCE groups.

Nutrition

FLEs offer seminars on nutrition to seniors, mostly at senior meal sites. These have recently been offered in 6 counties (Brown, Vilas/Florence/Forest, Green Lake, Fond du Lac, Taylor, and Wood). This is sometimes taught by nutrition educators as well. In Taylor County, the FLE teaches at the meal sites that are not income-eligible for FoodWise.

Portion control

This is a one-time seminar on eating smaller portions. It was recently presented for the HCE group in Jackson County.

Preparing freezer meals

This is a one-time seminar on preparing meals for the freezer. It was recently taught specifically for seniors in Oconto County.  Materials: Extension Publication B1306 Freezing Home Prepared Foods
