The Age-in-Place “Village” Movement

Listen now to guest speaker Ann Albert, Executive Director of SAIL (Sharing Active Independent Lives) introduce us to the “Village” Movement. Use this handout to follow along:  SAIL.

Sharing Active Independent Lives (SAIL) is the second oldest “Village” in the country. It is designed as an economical, sustainable, member-driven model of services aimed at keeping people healthy and in their own homes as they age.  SAIL addresses the challenges associated with a rapidly growing population of seniors, a limited labor force, lack of government funding, and changing preferences of people as they age.  Ann says, “I think there are many communities in WI who would benefit by creating a Village—SAIL is right here to help, too! And the underlying model of members (older adults) taking such an active role in their own healthy and meaningful aging is beautiful, isn’t it?”

If you are interested in getting a jump on the topic AARP has an article from a year ago: The Age-in-Place ‘Village’ Movement and NPR covered the concept in December:  ‘Village Movement’ Allows Elderly To Age In Their Homes.

Our guest, Ann Albert, also recommends the Village Movement Fact Sheet 2017.    You can follow up with Ann by email at:  ann@sailtoday.org
